A Boy in Greece
   For Papouli

My grandfather was a boy
in the mountains not far
from Delphi, great navel
of Mother Earth.
He lived in a village encircled
by dust and a silvery-green sea
of olive trees,
and lit by a billion stars.
He told me he could read by
their light alone.
I love to think of him
under that luminous sky,
eons before
I was born to his gentleness.
Even the darkness
cradled him,
a book creased open on his lap.
